Fundamentalist Rev. Jerry Falwell has blamed the terrorist attacks against New York and Washington on the American Civil Liberties Union, abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians who seek a secular alternate lifestyle.
"I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen,"" Falwell told the Christian television news show, The 700 Club, on Thursday. Host Pat Robertson had asked Falwell to comment on the attacks in which more than 5,000 people are believed to have perished.
"The American Civil Liberties Union"s got to take a lot of blame for this," Falwell said, "throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools.
"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million innocent babies we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make an alternate lifestyle ... all of them who have helped secularize America."
Robertson later issued a written statement saying that terrorism "is happening because God Almighty is lifting his protection from us." He said God is displeased by abortion, Internet pornography and a Supreme Court that ended prayer in public schools.
The 700 Club on the Christian Broadcasting Network is viewed by about one million Americans daily.
